Picnics are very popular during the warmer months of the year. As the weather gets warmer and being outside becomes a more sought-after activity, people start picnicking in parks and on green fields. Picnics are a great way of sharing time with people of good company, usually friends and family, but couples often go on picnics as well. By definition, a picnic is an excursion at which a meal is eaten outdoors, ideally in a place with a beautiful landscape. It is said that picnics became popular after the French Revolution when royal parks opened to the public. The common people packed a basket with food and a blanket and took their families to these extensive gardens for a nice meal under the sun. It is also said that during the Battle of Bull Run (American Civil War), women picnicked with their children, close enough to the battleground, that they could watch their husbands fight. Picnics are popular all through spring, summer, and fall; however, it is in July that most families are on vacation and spend the most time outside enjoying the warm summer weather. Picnic foods must be convenient enough to transport and to last in hot temperatures. Sandwiches, wraps, fruit salads, potato or bean salads, and pies are just some of the typical foods that people take on their picnic outings.
