If it’s October, then it must be National Seafood Month!

The importance of Seafood as an Industry can be measured by its contribution to our national economy. According to Seafoodnews.com, “the seafood industry puts over 250,000 people to work and contributes $60 billion to the U.S. economy each year.” As a result, the month of October was designated as National Seafood Month by Congress over 30 years ago.

The big hitters are Pacific salmon, sea scallops, shrimp, and lobster, as they contribute the most to total revenues in the U.S. Additionally, Alaskan pollock, menhaden and Pacific salmon account for more than half of all US fish caught.

According to James A. Morris, Jr., Ph.D. (Marine Ecologist for the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science), “Seafood is not only important to our nation’s food security and coastal economies, it is a critical part of a healthy diet.”

Nationaldaycalendar.com says fish “are a great natural source of vitamins and minerals such as Vitamins A, B and D,”

Eating fish also promotes heart health, eases “tender joints,” promotes brain growth, and can help fight depression.
