February 13th is National Italian Food Day! Whether it’s eating out or preparing a home cooked meal, Italian food is enjoyed by most people. An average Italian meal is divided into two parts.  The first part usually includes a pasta. The second part includes any meat or fish. Even though tomatoes were not originally found in Italian food until the 1700s, they quickly became a staple. Today, the essential ingredients in Italian food consist of olive oil, garlic, mozzarella, ricotta, parmigiana, tomatoes, sausage and, of course, pasta. It is commonly believed pasta was brought from the Orient to Italy by Marco Polo, and tomatoes originated in South America and were brought to Italy by Columbus.
