September 5th is National Cheese Pizza Day. What we today know as pizza may have had its earliest beginnings in ancient Greece, where Greeks covered their bread with herbs, oils and cheese. One of the earliest names for this delicious treat comes from the ancient Greek word for “pie,” which is “Pita”. The Romans, famous for adopting the Greek culture, created a variation of the pita by placing honey, cheese and bay leaves on a sheet of dough. Flash forward 2,000 years to modern Napoli, where the modern pie was created. This pie, it is believed, was created to celebrate the newly created nation of Italy in the latter part of the 19th century. Flatbread was topped with red tomato sauce, white mozzarella cheese and green basil in honor of the Italian flag.
