Tomorrow, July 13, is National French Fry Day! Despite its name, the French fry does not actually originate in France. Instead, it is traced back to Belgium, where potatoes have been fried since the late 1600s. Belgians during this time would cut up and fry fish as a staple for their meals. When the rivers froze over and it became difficult to fish, they found the potato and cut and fried it the same way – thus, the fry was born! However, it gained its popularity in France and spread around the world from there. It was Americans that coined the term “French fry.”
