National Wiener Schnitzel Day is celebrated every September 9th. A Wiener Schnitzel is a veal cutlet coated in bread and then pan-fried. This renowned dish is considered an Austrian delicacy in its beautiful capital, Vienna.
Wiener Schnitzel is so iconic that all over the world this recipe is duplicated. For instance, in America, there’s the ever-popular chicken-fried steak and in Japan, tonkatsu, a breaded and deep-fried pork cutlet. But there is nothing like the authentic dish of Wiener Schnitzel. There are lots of pretenders to the throne, but for the real deal, head to Austria.
There is an interesting history behind the beginnings of Wiener Schnitzel. In the Middle Ages Arabs covered their meat in breadcrumbs before cooking it. Then in 1134, the Romans left a record of a dish called Cotoletta a la Milanese, which was a dish made of veal, breadcrumbs and lemon. In 1862, the term “Wiener Schnitzel” was born, and in 1905 Figlmuller restaurant was founded and is said to be the original home of the Wiener Schnitzel.
