It’s National Cheeseburger Day!

Today is National Cheeseburger Day! Although there are many who lay claim to be the first to apply cheese to a sizzling hamburger, the actual author of this popular treat may never be discovered. Wikipedia gives credit to a 16-year-old who applied cheese to a burger in his father’s Pasadena, CA, restaurant in 1926. But Wikipedia also posts a picture of a plaque dedicated to that event in 2017 that sets the year at 1924, illustrating the inconsistencies in the stories behind this famous sandwich’s origins. In 1928, a cheeseburger appeared on a menu in a restaurant in Los Angeles. A restaurant in Kentucky claims to have invented the cheeseburger in 1934. A year later, the name cheeseburger was trademarked by a man associated with a drive-in restaurant chain in Denver, CO.

As of this posting, the largest cheeseburger ever made was concocted in 2012 by Minnesota’s Black Bear Casino. It was 2,014 pounds, obliterating the previous record of 881 pounds. Although the origins of National Cheeseburger Day are still being researched, one thing is for certain: September 18^th is the day it is celebrated each year.
