Celebrate World Food Day with Quaker Valley Foods!

This Friday, October 16^th, is World Food Day! World Food Day was established in November 1979 by member countries of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations to commemorate the date of the FAO’s founding in 1945. This year, the FAO is celebrating its 75^th anniversary. Each year, the FAO has a theme. This year’s theme is “Grow, Nourish, Sustain. Together,” and it comes at a particularly challenging time. According to its website, “Nearly 690 million people are hungry, up 10 million since 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic could add between 83-132 million people to this number, depending on the economic growth scenario.”

In addition to the United States of America, is recognized through events held in over 150 countries in India, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The US has been an active participant in World Food Day since the beginning, realizing sponsorship from more than 450 national, private voluntary organizations.

Although World Food Day is formally recognized on October 16^th each year, there are events held in conjunction with the FAO throughout the year that include Sunday dinners sponsored by Oxfam America, and the Iowa Hunger Summit, organized by World Food Prize as part of their annual symposium in Des Moines, Iowa.
