The Festival of Lights

Hanukkah (also spelled Chanukah or Hanukah), meaning “dedication”, began yesterday evening. It commemorates the reclaiming of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem after it was taken over by the Seleucids in the second century BCE. When the Jews sought to light the temple’s menorah, they found only one cruse of oil that survived. Miraculously, that one-day supply of oil lasted for eight days. Thus, the eight-day celebration known as the “festival of lights” began. Each night is celebrated with a menorah lighting and special prayers. Since the miracle of Hanukkah involved oil, it is customary to eat fried foods like latke (a potato pancake).
