National Pigs in a Blanket Day!

Today is National Pigs in a Blanket Day!  This is a great way to celebrate one of America’s most popular finger foods.  For those of you who do not know, Pigs in a Blanket are miniature hot dogs with bread rolled around the outside.  They are easily eaten by hand and can be dipped in ketchup or mustard.  These are different from sausage rolls which are very popular in Europe.  A sausage roll can be served a whole meal either as breakfast or lunch, but only one pig in a blanket will not suffice for an entire meal.

The first written record of “Pigs in a Blanket” occurs in “Betty Crocker’s Cooking for Kids” in 1957.   So they have been around for over 60 years!  This treat began as a snack for children but has become a very popular dinner party snack food.  In the United Kingdom, sausages are used and instead of bread it is wrapped in bacon, creating an extremely juicy and savory taste!  You can combine this with the typical Pigs in a Blanket by wrapping the mini hot dog in bacon and then cooking that in a wrapped biscuit.
