National Grilled Cheese Day!

Friday is National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day!  This easy-to-make meal has not been around forever.  In 1915, the invention of Kraft cheese is what made this sandwich popular.  James L. Kraft invented a way to transport cheese easily and without spoiling during that year, and the craze started to spread.

During the Great Depression, Mr. Kraft and his company prospered from the slogan “you can fill a family of four for 19 cents.”  All it took was some Kraft Cheese and a few slices of bread!  This was also popular in school cafeterias because of how cheap it was to make.  Cafeterias also purchased cans of tomato soup to satisfy Vitamin C and protein requirements in school lunches, thus starting the classic childhood combination of grilled cheese and tomato soup.

The grilled cheese sandwich has had a resurgence in recent years because of all the variations of this classic treat.  Even though a sandwich like this would set you back a few more than 19 cents, here are some great ideas for your grilled cheese creation!
