As we get closer to Memorial Day weekend, a holiday which many Americans look forward to, it is important to remember what it signifies. While for many it means a day off work, the start of the summer, or a barbecue with family and friends, it is really a day to honor those who died while serving our country. Originally called Decoration Day, Memorial Day began right after the Civil War, when communities dedicated a day to remember and to honor all the fallen soldiers by visiting their graves and decorating them. It wasn’t until the 1960s when it became a national holiday celebrated by all communities at once. Today, very common celebrations of Memorial Day include outdoor picnics, outdoor concerts, family and friends gatherings around the grill, camping, and many more. Like most occasions, these revolve around food!
