It’s National Baked Scallops Day!

​Today is National Baked Scallops Day, celebrated every year on March 12^th. Scallops can be prepared in a variety of ways. In fact, scallops are typically available to the public in two ways.

The first is the adductor muscle of the scallop. This muscle is the form of scallop that is most familiar, a sweet, rich, medallion of white meat. It is the form of scallop that you would typically see on a menu in a restaurant.

The second type of scallop consumed is known as the coral or roe form of muscle and is crescent in shape with a color from bright orange to pale. You likely are not familiar with this type of scallop as it contains many toxins. If you do see the coral scallop, it will likely be sold attached to the abductor muscle.
