An Independence Day Celebration!

Thursday, we celebrate Independence Day on July 4^th. The reality is that we are actually celebrating the signing of the Declaration of Independence, signed by members of the Continental Congress two days after Congress voted to legally separate and declare its independence from Great Britain.

On July 2, 1776, after the vote to declare independence from Britain, John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail:

“The second day of July 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.”

For the most part, these celebrations Adams suggestion continue to this day. There is, however, one important celebration not noted by our second president—the celebration of food and the holiday barbecue. Whether you are hosting or attending, the Fourth of July barbecue is something that the great majority of Americans will experience on this day.
